He sacrificed life in the present to find love in the past.
So the other day when Mom and I were shopping we were listening to the Somewhere in Time soundtrack and I was reminded of how much I love the soundtrack…and the movie! And it reminded me that several people have asked about Somewhere in Time so I thought I’d go ahead and write a review about it. Being my favoritest film evah. ;-) Let me preface it by saying that Somewhere in Time is not a film for everyone. Basically as in it’s not for someone who is in the least bit practical, logical, or anti-romantic. Extreme suspension of belief is required. If you think too hard about exactly what happened it gets confusing. :-) It’s about as sappy as it can get. And *MAJOR SPOILERS* it doesn’t have a happy ending.
So it’s not for everyone. Basically everyone I know who has seen it either totally adores it (like myself…my parents…my aunt Lora…a select few friends) or hates it (like my brothers…and most of my friends :-)).
It’s the story of a Richard Collier (Christopher Reeve), a playwright. On the eve of his first successful play, he is approached by an old woman who gives him an antique watch and asks him to “come back to me”. Several years later, tired of everything in life, he goes to Mackinac Island to the beautiful Grand Hotel to take some time off and relax. While there he sees a picture of a beautiful actress, Elise McKenna (Jane Seymour). He falls in love with the picture and researches about the actress. He finds that she had been at the Grand Hotel in 1912 and that she was also the old woman who had given him the watch. He then decides to travel back in time to meet her. But getting there is only the beginning of his obstacles—he must get past her controlling manager, W. F. Robinson (Christopher Plummer), avoid awkward situations that arise from the "fish out of water" part of a modern man suddenly dropped into the world of 1912, and, once he and Elise realize their love...whether or not he will be able to stay forever in the past.
There are so many good things about this movie. Christopher Reeve is fantastic as Richard Collier, giving a boyish, nervous kind of charm to his character. He does a wonderful job showing the growth of the character from devil-may-care to a man who's whole passion is the woman he loves. Jane Seymour, who is my absolutely most favorite actress and IMO one of the most gorgeous women ever-ever-ever, is radiant in this role as Elise McKenna (I've always adored the name "Elise" after seeing this film...) And the chemistry between the leads is awesome. They’re such a great couple (although come to think of it, I think that Jane’s just good with anyone…because in anything I’ve seen her in, she and the male lead always have incredible chemistry—she and Christopher Reeve here…and then with Anthony Andrews in The Scarlet Pimpernel, for starters). Christopher Plummer is a great antagonist (this was the first role I saw him in other than Captain Von Trapp, and he was excellent here!) and there is a large assortment of great supporting actors.
The backdrop of the lovely Mackinac Island and the stately Grand Hotel is almost as memorable as the story itself. The costumes are all gorgeous.
I could write an entire post on the soundtrack itself. It’s my absolutely favorite soundtrack, and the theme song is my favorite song ever—like on my ringtone-and-anything-else-that-plays-music kind of favorite. It’s so peaceful, romantic, relaxing…it’s kind of “soul music” for me. :-)
The only downside to the film is a teeny bit of content…a few swear words and one man-why-did-they-put-that-in-there-it-doesn’t-do-anything-to-the-plot-that-was-ridiculous scene. Both of which are covered by ClearPlay (insert shameless plug…I absolutely adore ClearPlay! :-)).
Overall, Somewhere in Time is a beautiful, dramatic, utterly romantic, epic tear-jerking-ending kind of film…that frankly not everyone will like. :-) But I completely adore it…which is all that matters, I guess.
And here’s the theme song. Excuse me while I float away on the utter gorgeousness of it…it’s complete and totally beauty put to music…
(be sure to turn off the music in the sidebar before playing! :-))

Ah! I actually just saw this movie, after my mom told me to rent it because it's one of her favorites :)
I actually liked it quite a bit, as I was watching it play out...but when it ended, I was SO upset! I mean, the ending was just...just...Ah!!! I was depressed for hours.
Ha, so beyond that, it WAS a pretty good movie :) I really liked Christopher Reeve in it...he was positively wonderful! And Jane Seymour was just so lovely! They were definitely an enjoyable pair!

Your Uncle Carl and I both love this movie! I will have to pull it out and watch it again :).
It does sound interesting, though slightly odd. But I've seen several odd movies before and loved them. :D
The soundtrack theme - that was beautiful! Seems happy and sad, all blended into a harmonious beauty! :)
To the KING be all the glory!

I loved it untill the end, he was a little too pathetic at the end for my taste! But other then that I loved it, I'd never seen him in anything but already knew I loved Jane Seymore!
Well you already know my opinion of that movie so I might as well not say anything......ridiculous....foolishness!.....OK I am sorry, I will leave you to your doom. JK JK ;)
Alright, if there is one good thing about that movie it's the soundtrack. The Somewhere In Time soundtrack is still one of my favorite. When I have the mental strength, I sometimes sit and listen to the soundtrack and manage to separate the story from the music. :)
