Dickens in Musicals

(*EDIT:* Due to the bug, scheduling conflicts, etc. (in short...life! :-)) this blog will count as Thursday and Friday's post. :-) See you all Saturday with my dream cast for Tale!)

Sorry this is so late...I've picked up a bug going around the family and didn't get time till now to post!

Yesterday I discussed in detail my favorite Dickens musical, A Tale of Two Cities. Today I just wanted to share a few clips from some of his other musicals. :-)

"As Long as He Needs Me" from the musical Oliver, sung by the amazing Ruthie Henshall, who coincidentally played a much simliar tragic "fallen angel" character, Fantine, in Les Miserables.

"I'd Do Anything", one of my favorite numbers from the 1968 film version of the same musical.

"When Love is Gone" - ok, so technically I suppose that The Muppets Christmas Carol isn't a musical (although it's listed as such), but I love the songs in it, so had to include it! :-) While I don't care for his girlfriend's singing voice that much, the song is beautiful and Michael Caine's performance in this scene is lovely. He is (as far as I know) the only Scrooge who does more than simply look like, "oh, man...my bad"...he really looks heartbroken at the mistakes he's made.

"Mr. Scrooge" - because I love this song and the way it's filmed...you don't see him till the very end and all that. Actually, if I had my way I'd post all of the songs from Muppet Christmas Carol...they're all so good!!!

"Thank You Very Much" - from the little-known 1970 musical film starring Albert Finney as Scrooge, this film is really quite fun. This number in particular is a very fun song! :-)

This is actually a workshop version before Tale came to Broadway...but its sooo gorgeous and one of my top faves so I had to include it. :-) Ack, that one line! Excuse me while I get the Kleenexes. :-)

Natalie Toro singing "Out of Sight, Out of Mind" from Tale. This woman is the best Madame Defarge period.

"I Can't Recall" - And lastly, I had to of course include probably my favorite song from Tale...hope you don't mind! :-)

So there you have it! Have you seen any of these, and which is your favorite song?

I know it's close to your heart, but I NEED to say that the "I'd Do Anything" song disturbed me deeply.

=P

Wow, Ruthie Henshall is better at As Long As He Needs Me than Shani Wallis was!

I Can't Recall... wow, wow, wow, wow, wow. And that sounds so inane. I might have to add yet another singer to my list of favorites. Because, of course, this song is already on the favorites list. Oh, my word, he's seriously crying...that makes two of us. I LOVE THIS.

I haven't seen Oliver! in years! haha...ever since you posted this post I've been singing "I'd do anything, for you dear, anything!' All over the house. Loudly. So much fun. I approve of whatever that guys name is who played Sydney, btw. But you already know that.
